Selenium was discovered in 1808 by Jons Jacob Berzelius. It obtained its name from the Greek word 'Selene' which means the moon. Selenium (Se) is a nonmetal with atomic number 34, falling on the fourth period of the periodic table in the Chalcogen group along with oxygen, sulfur and tellurium.

Selenium minerals are rare, and although seleniumrich ores exist, few are mined exclusively for the element. Most selenium is obtained as a byproduct of copper ore processing. Selenium is occasionally found in pure form. It occurs in the rare minerals clausthalite and crooksite. Despite the name, the mineral selenite actually contains no ...

· Molecules, an international, peerreviewed Open Access journal. Selenium substituents which are disposed β to an electron deficient centre, such as a carboion porbital, or the π* orbital of an electron deficient psystem, interact in a stabilising way by a combination of CSe hyperconjugation (σ SeC –π* interaction), and a throughspace homoconjugative n Se –π* interaction.
tellurium and ended the test in one hour with final selenium and tellurium concentrations of g/L and g/L, respectively. As shown in Figure 6 the concentration of selenium in the solution was reduced from to g/L at 75°C in 2 hours, while the tellurium concentration was only slightly reduced from to g/L.
Selenium was discovered in 1817 by Berzelius and Gahn, who isolated it from a red residue in sulfuric acid that had been made from pyrite mined at Fahlun, Sweden (Greenwood and Earnshaw, 1997, p. 747). It was named from the Greek word selene (moon), because of its chemical similarity to tellurium.

· Despite being close neighbors on the Periodic Table, selenium and tellurium present a totally different abilities to form glasses. Se is a very good glass former, and gives rise to numerous glass compositions which are popular for their transparency in the infrared range and their stability against crystallization. These glasses can be shaped into sophistied optical devices such as optical ...
· Selenium and tellurium: reduction of hydroperoxides and peroxynitrite. Ebselen is a GPx mimic not only with respect to peroxidase activity . Similar to GPx (vide infra), it reacts efficiently with peroxynitrite and exhibits the highest secondorder rate constant known thus far for a lowmolecularweight compound with peroxynitrite (33, 34).

· Rio Tinto is to construct a new plant that will recover tellurium, a critical mineral used in solar panels, from copper refining at its Kennecott mine near Salt Lake City, Utah. The company is investing million to set up the plant, which will recover tellurium as a byproduct of copper smelting, extracting a valuable mineral from waste streams.
· From pv magazine USA. Rio Tinto plans to spend nearly 3 million on a facility to recover tellurium, a critical mineral used in solar panels, from its Kennecott mine near Salt Lake City, Utah.
Selenium is a byproduct of copper ore, in addition to tellurium rhenium, etc. It has been used as a pigment for ages. It is utilized as a colorant for glasses and bricks. In recent years, it has been used for the production of manganese.
· Rio Tinto to build tellurium plant at Kennecott copper mine in US. 09 Mar 2021. Metals and mining company Rio Tinto has announced plans to build a new plant to recover tellurium from copper refining at its Kennecott mine in the US. The new plant will have 20 tonnes of tellurium production capacity per year. Credit: JacquieS from Pixabay.
Selenium and tellurium are generally present in slimes as intermetallic compounds of silver, copper, and occasionally gold (, Ag2 Se, CU2 Te and (Ag,Au)Te 2 ). A variety of processes are employed for the extraction of selenium and tellurium from slimes, as well as their separation from each other.
