This study investigated foundry properties of silica sand protrusions at two selected sites of Amhara region, Blue Nile gorge and Jemma river basin. The work incorporates both the field and laboratory works. Under the field work ten specific areas under the two sites were surveyed and based on preliminary tests performed four of them were selected for sampling.
` The refractoriness of the silica sand is highest. Fineness ² ` Finer sand molds resists metal penetration and produces smooth casting surface. ` Fineness and permeability are in conflict with each other and hence they must be balanced for optimum results. Bench Life ² ` It is ability of the molding sand to retain its properties during storage.

Silica sand isn't necessarily washed sand. Silicon dioxide is a chemical compound that is also known as silica. Silica sand is a type of sand that mostly consists of tiny granules of quartz. Quartz itself comes in many varieties, according to its color and microstructure. Silica sand also consists of other fine particles of rock and mineral.
The silica sand used in abrasive blasting typically fractures into fine particles and becomes airborne (see Figure 1). Inhalation of such silica appears to produce a more severe lung reaction than silica that is not freshly fractured [Vallyathan et al. 1988]. This factor may contribute to the development of acute and accelerated forms of ...
